Huntsville Central Church Couple Celebrates 70 Years of Marriage

Julia Rotger, born on May 12, 1938, in Santurce, Puerto Rico, grew up in New York City, where her early years were shaped by family, faith, and a strong sense of community. Luis Guillermo Valentin-Maldonado, born on April 2, 1932, in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, built a life defined by service, dedication, and family.

Luis enlisted in the U.S. Army immediately after high school and served in both the Korean War, where he earned the Purple Heart, and the Vietnam War, completing a distinguished military career that spanned decades.

The couple met at a local carnival and married on July 21, 1956. This year, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, marking seven decades of partnership and devotion.

During Luis's military service, the couple raised four children: Evelyn, Steven, William, and Lisa, and later welcomed nine grandchildren. Their travels took them to duty stations and communities around the world, including Huntsville, North Carolina, the Panama Canal Zone, New York, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Colorado, Illinois, and Germany.

After retiring as a Master Sergeant in 1985 in Huntsville, Alabama, Valentin continued his commitment to public service by returning to school and becoming a correctional officer at Limestone Prison.

Julia pursued her own professional path, serving as a dental hygienist assistant and providing care and support in every community the family called home.

Together, Julia Rotger and Luis Guillermo Valentin-Maldonado have created a legacy of strength, service, and love – a life that continues to inspire their family and all who know their story.
